Though my work often begins with a single moment, an intriguing shape, color, or vignette, as I build upon this initial inspiration, the complexity of each piece deepens, creating an appearance of exuberance and busyness.
This sense of hyperactivity, however, is belied by the slow processes of collage and sewing that I use to create my work. Each work is a thoughtful contemplation on balance and composition, forming over the course of many weeks or months and as the result of repeated revisions.
The resulting artifact is a chronicle of a an extended period of creation, the gestation of an image: a concrete yet unquantifiable synthesis of form and material. The whole reflects and openly celebrates its parts, reminding and perhaps warning of the disintegration that could occur through the alteration of a single critical element.
The materials I use reflect a dissatisfaction with of the physical and conceptual limitations of two dimensional media. In my work, pieces of painted paper and canvas are freed from static confines, cut and reformed, reshaped, layered, woven. These elements are combined anew with fabric and thread, the dimensionality of these materials filling a void left by the flatness of paint alone.
Often the fabric and thread I use has been handed down from female family members, women who are/were talented sewers. By employing this inheritance for creation, I imbue second-hand materials with new significance, generating new meaning for items that would otherwise be associated only with memory. I have come to embrace these materials as an integral part of my practice, and by using them, I am proud to further assert the validity of utilizing traditionally feminine methods to create fine art.
I studied Painting, Art History, and Museum Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and also with the Rome Art Program in 2010 in Florence, Italy. I currently maintain a studio at Lyndon Street Collaborative in Greensboro, NC and a glorified junk room/sewing room/studio in my home as well.
